10.282

The Commentary states: 'Being unable to enter markless contemplation spontaneously' is due to lack of mastery. 'Being unable to spontaneously manifest marks and lands' clarifies that before this bhūmi one also manifests marks and lands, but it is not yet called mastery because one cannot manifest them spontaneously. 'Manifesting marks' means that whatever marks one wishes to manifest, one can manifest them, such as manifesting marks of gold and silver, marks of jewels, and so forth; this is broad and pervasive, and within marks one separately establishes mastery over lands. 'Mastery over lands' means that according to one's desire to manifest large or small lands, or to manifest the colors of gold, silver, and so forth, one can immediately manifest them. Lands are narrower: lands are provisional, specific, and supported; marks are real, specific, and supporting, because lands are distinguished and established within marks.
