述曰：下釋妨難有二，此初也。如彼論說：於極喜住一切惡趣諸煩惱品所有麁重皆悉永斷，一切上、中煩惱品皆不現行，於無加行無功用無相住中，一切能障無生法忍諸煩惱品所有麁重，皆悉永斷，一切煩惱皆不現前，於最上成滿菩薩住中，當知一切煩惱習氣、隨眠障礙皆悉永斷，入如來住。此中意說，金剛心位亦是成滿菩薩住攝故。所知障麁重有三：一、在皮，極喜住皆永斷；二、在膚，無加行無功用無相住皆永斷；三、在肉，如來住中皆悉永斷，得一切障極清淨智，此中意說已斷處故，廣如彼說。故此論云「由斯故說」，即四十八說也。若煩惱麁重非彼種子，即非唯三住及所知障地地能斷，何故但說三住斷也？

[The Commentary states:] The text below resolves objections in two parts; this is the first. As that treatise states: In the Abode of Utmost Joy, all heaviness of all afflictive categories belonging to the miserable destinies is completely and forever severed, and all superior and middling categories of afflictions cease to manifest actively. In the Effortless, Spontaneous, Signless Abode, all heaviness of all afflictive categories that obstruct the endurance of the non-arising of dharmas is completely and forever severed, and all afflictions do not manifest before one. In the Utmost, Fully Accomplished Bodhisattva Abode, one should know that all afflictive residual impressions and latent dormant obstructions are completely and forever severed, and one enters the Tathāgata Abode. What is meant here is that the stage of the vajra-like mind is also subsumed under the Fully Accomplished Bodhisattva Abode. The heaviness of cognitive obstructions is of three kinds: first, on the outer skin, which is forever severed in the Abode of Utmost Joy; second, in the inner skin, which is forever severed in the Effortless, Spontaneous, Signless Abode; third, in the flesh, which is completely and forever severed in the Tathāgata Abode, where one attains the supremely pure wisdom regarding all obstructions. The intention here refers to the loci where they have been severed, as explained in detail there. Therefore this treatise says "For this reason it is said," which refers precisely to the explanation in the forty-eighth fascicle. If the heaviness of afflictions is not their seeds, so that it is not only in the three abodes, and cognitive obstructions can be severed ground by ground, why is it said only that they are severed in three abodes?
