The Commentary states: The reason why the hindrances to the knowable associated with the six consciousnesses are abandoned gradually across the various stages unlike [the seventh] is that they comprehensively take internal and external objects as their cognitive objects, and can arise from both the internal body and the external body. Furthermore, within those objects, they each range across coarse and subtle, unlike the seventh consciousness which exclusively takes internal objects. The first six consciousnesses range over coarse and subtle objects, whereas the seventh takes only subtle objects, its mode of activity in the three realms being uniform and so forth; thus it is abandoned at the adamantine mind. Those within the six consciousnesses have nine grades of activity, and because their varieties and classes are manifold, they are abandoned portion by portion across the various stages. The five consciousnesses are led by the sixth, so they pertain to both hindrances, as explained previously under the two hindrances.
