The Commentary states: Next is the third section, distinguishing the similarities and differences among the four paths of the three vehicles. For the two vehicles, preparatory and advanced paths may each arise separately as the preparatory and advanced paths for nine grades, or there may be only one preparatory and only one advanced path; thus the two paths of preparation and advancement are not definitively collective or individual; this is said in terms of the accommodated advanced path. If not, it would contradict fascicle nine of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-bhāṣya: their uninterrupted and liberated paths must each arise separately. For example, having arisen as the uninterrupted path to abandon one grade, the liberated path arises in the second moment; this liberated path of the second moment cannot serve as the uninterrupted path with respect to the second grade. For the second grade, an uninterrupted and a liberated path must arise separately; because their faculties are dull, it is the same through to the ninth grade; this is so for both the successive and the leaping practitioners. Because there are nine grades that can be gradually abandoned, preparation and advancement arise individually. If within a single contemplation, however many grades are abandoned, there is collectively one preparation and afterwards one advancement; thus preparation and advancement are either collective or individual, because it is easy. If one gradually abandons the nine grades and emerges from contemplation, or if one abandons the nine grades without emerging from contemplation, the uninterrupted and liberated paths must each arise separately because it is difficult. This is spoken of regarding the path of cultivation; there is no such occurrence in the path of seeing, because their faculties are dull, and when directly realizing the unconditioned, they cannot abandon afflictions. Even supposing that they previously suppressed them through a mundane path and later entered seeing, they are also collectively abandoned in a single grade along with seeing, not forming separate paths.
