The Commentary states: "Remaining contaminated [phenomena]" refers to what remains outside the two obstructions: namely, contaminated wholesome [phenomena], the entire three kinds of indeterminate phenomena, and a small portion born of maturation, excluding the portion belonging to clinging to phenomena. "Inferior uncontaminated seeds" are the active [dharmas] produced in the ten grounds (bhūmi), and the seeds of medium and lower grades of their kind; they are transformed by the adamantine path (vajropama-mārga). "Extremely consummate" differentiates it from the previous bodhisattvas' basis not yet being complete. "Extremely luminous" means that the mental modes (ākāra) are distinct and clear, differentiating it from the previous bodhisattvas' wisdom, because theirs was not fully clear. Alternatively, "extremely consummate" excludes all who are in training (śaikṣa), while "extremely luminous" excludes the non-learners (aśaikṣa) of the two vehicles. Regarding "the purely pristine fundamental consciousness," "pristine" means uncontaminated, and "pure" means unmixed; it is not like the wholesome [states] of the seventh consciousness and so forth in the causal stage, which are pristine but not pure, while the fundamental consciousness was pure but not pristine. Now, because this eighth [consciousness] continues uncontaminated without interruption, it is called "purely pristine." This active consciousness is not a basis for the remaining contaminated and inferior uncontaminated seeds; therefore, they are all perpetually cast aside.
