The Commentary states: All sentient beings, whether ordinary beings or noble ones, possess the first one; thus the sūtras say that all sentient beings are originally in nirvāṇa. Ordinary beings and learners of the two vehicles have not realized the latter three nirvāṇas. Non-learners of the two vehicles and those of indeterminate lineage who have not entered the bhūmis possess the first two; those of determinate lineage possess the first three. Bodhisattvas who progress directly and enter the bhūmis possess the first and the fourth; non-learners who turn their minds and enter the bhūmis possess the first two and the fourth; the Tathāgata possesses all four kinds. Because there is the distinction of these six positions, regarding attainment through severing bonds and the stages of attainment, whether simultaneous or at different times, each should be explained in detail; the rest can be understood from the text: this is the possession or non-possession [of the nirvāṇas] by the three vehicles.
