The Commentary states: Next is the explanation of the body of liberation. Within this there are two parts: first brief, then detailed. The fruit of these two revulsions of the basis attained by the two vehicles is only named the body of liberation, because it is liberated from saṃsāra and the dharmas of bondage; because their revulsion of the basis is not adorned by extraordinary dharmas such as the ten powers, it is not called the Dharma body (dharmakāya). Extraordinary dharmas mean that through severing the cognitive hindrance (jñeyāvaraṇa), one attains the basis for immeasurable merits. When the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra, fascicle seventy-eight [of the Yogācārabhūmi], and so on state that "tathatā is the body of liberation," [the question is asked:] "World-Honoured One, is the revulsion of the basis attained by the two vehicles named the Dharma body or not?" "Good son, it is not named the Dharma body." "What body should it be named?" "It is named the 'body of liberation'. In terms of the body of liberation, the two vehicles and the Buddha are said to be equal; in terms of the Dharma body, there are said to be distinctions, with immeasurable, supreme merits beyond the reach of calculation or analogy; therefore, that is named tathatā." This is the body of liberation of the two vehicles, not the body of liberation among the fivefold Dharma body; the substance of the body of liberation among the fivefold Dharma body is solely the mental factor of resolve (adhimokṣa), whereas this is unconditioned liberation. Their fruit of bodhi is the body of liberation-knowledge-and-vision among the fivefold Dharma body, and is not named the Dharma body. Because both bodhi and nirvāṇa are free from bondage, they are merely named the body of liberation.
