The Commentary states: Regarding the word 'pure': it is revealed through an analogy. Just as although the nature of tathatā is fundamentally pure by nature, without cultivation its purity cannot be made manifest, which applies equally to teaching and principle. It is like precious gems: although their nature is bright and clean, if they are not polished, they have no means to shine forth light. It is also like Mount Sumeru: although it is a collection of precious jewels, without the solar disk turning to shine upon it, how could it manifest light? This treatise is likewise so, as noted in the beginning of the ninth fascicle.
