The Commentary states: This third volition, which activates bodily and vocal action, possesses activity—that is, it transforms in relation to an object and acts upon the mind, and further can activate body and speech; therefore, it is called karma. "Path" has two meanings: First, it is that which is traversed by the preceding two volitions of deliberation and resolution; that is, because the third volition is traversed by the preceding two volitions, it has the meaning of an object of cognition and that which is induced, just as body and speech are that which is traversed by volition, and so forth. Second, or alternatively, it leads to the production of future ripening (vipāka) of suffering and pleasure; therefore, it is also called a path. Volition being called a path also applies to karma; it is not only called karma, but also called a path. Moreover, [this applies] also to the two of body and speech: it is not only that body and speech are called paths while volition is only called karma; that is to say, body and speech also attain the name of karma, and volition is also called a path. "Path" means support, because relying on it one advances toward and generates a future fruit. Among the ten paths of karma, because the volition of the first seven is traversed by the karma of the latter three, and because mental karma can generate future ripening, this is its meaning of "path".
