The Commentary states: This directly describes the four characteristics of a lifetime. The "Bodhisattva-bhūmi" explains the four characteristics of a single moment, while other treatises and passages address only a lifetime; here both are expounded, and both are alternately cited. This accords with the explanations in the Prakaraṇāryavācā and Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, fascicle 88. Various treatises all explain the difference (decay) of a single moment solely with respect to what came before; here, decay is also explained with respect to what comes after. Treatise texts generally explain this for all sentient beings: since the final mind of an aśaikṣa has no subsequent phenomena, it is posited solely with reference to what came before; this treatise also speaks with the exception of that final mind, stating that it applies to the other classes of sentient beings, so there is no contradiction. Since the arising over a single lifetime constitutes a characteristic when viewed in relation to itself, the characteristic of decay is posited on the basis of transformation, unlike that of a single moment which is viewed in relation to preceding and succeeding phenomena.
