The Commentary states: The treatise master refutes it. The syllogism here is: The dormant afflictions of greed and so forth are not subsumed under the unassociated; because they are named greed and so forth; just like actively manifested greed and so forth. Here, greed, anger, and delusion are each argued individually. For the Sarvāstivādins, dormant afflictions are actively manifested entanglements (paryavasthāna); among all schools, this view is the coarsest in conception. We now in the Mahāyāna hold that dormant afflictions are simply mental factors and minds—the defiled seeds within the eighth consciousness. Therefore, we refute them; this does not mean that by rejecting their being unassociated, we make them [simply] associated [caitasikas], for these are neither identical nor different.
