The Commentary states: 'True' excludes the false, and 'Thus' differentiates from the inverted. The former excludes the imagined nature; the latter excludes the dependent nature. Alternatively, 'True' excludes the defiled, because it is not deceptive and false; 'Thus' differentiates from the undefiled, because it is not conditioned. 'True' means real; 'Thus' means permanent; hence it is named 'tathatā'. If so, what difference is there between this and the Mahīśāsaka conception of a truly existent tathatā of wholesome phenomena and the like?
