The Commentary states: 'Primordial nature' (prakṛti) refers precisely to the supreme nature of the Sāṃkhyas; 'and so forth' includes the real categories (padārtha) of the Vaiśeṣikas and others, which are manifold like this. Before that primordial nature of the Sāṃkhyas has transformed into the Great (mahat) and the rest, it is merely called 'primordial nature' (svabhāva); hence ancient [translators] called it the 'dark nature' (tamas/avācya). The former is clung to by the Hīnayāna and others; the latter is clung to by non-Buddhists and others. The two layers of 'citta and nimitta' should be understood according to [the previous explanation of] the self; these two also have [forms] that condition generally and [forms] that condition individually, because the twenty views, sixty-two [views], and so forth are all admitted to exist.
