The Commentary states: This explains the reason why external phenomena lack the meaning of an objective condition. Since what is clung to does not exist, it cannot be an objective condition; its image appears corresponding to sentiment, like a second moon, and we do not bar the perceived object. Non-Buddhists and others challenge: 'If external form is really non-existent, it can indeed not be the object of internal consciousness; but another's mind is really existent, so why would it not be the ālambana of internal consciousness? Furthermore, the Buddha's knowledge of others' minds can apprehend others' minds; the Viṃśikā says: "Except for the Buddha's knowledge of others' minds, because [ordinary beings] do not know the sphere as experienced by the Buddha, it is called not knowing according to reality"—that is, it apprehends phenomena external to the mind. How can it be said that the mind only apprehends objects that are not separate from consciousness?'
