The Commentary states: Below is the specific refutation, in which there are two parts: first, the refutation; second, the conclusion. Within the refutation there are two: first, the refutation that qualities do not belong to genus; second, the refutation that qualities and genus are dissociated from each other. This is the first. It first refutes that conventional fire based on genus cannot be established. Qualities such as ferocity and redness of real fire are not the qualities of generic-cum-particular. For according to their system, earth has fourteen qualities, namely: color-form (rūpa), taste (rasa), smell (gandha), touch (sparśa), number (saṃkhyā), measure (parimāṇa), distinctness (pṛthaktva), conjunction (saṃyoga), disjunction (vibhāga), priority (paratva), posteriority (aparatva), fluidity (dravatva), viscidity (sneha), and velocity/conditioning (saṃskāra). Water also has fourteen qualities, excluding smell from the former fourteen and taking heaviness (gurutva). Fire has eleven kinds, excluding taste, viscidity, and heaviness from water's fourteen. Wind has nine qualities, excluding color-form and fluidity from fire's eleven. Color-form is a quality of fire and the like, whereas generic-cum-particular genus has no qualities. Now, in saying that qualities such as 'ferocity and redness' do not belong to genus: 'ferocity' is the cause of efficacy among saṃskāras (velocity/action), not the cause of recollection (smṛti); it is also called 'sharpness' (tīkṣṇa), which is the fierce and sharp force upon fire. 'Redness' is the quality of color-form. These reside in fire, not as qualities of genus.
