The Commentary states: This summarizes the previous explanations and shows that [the opponent's objection] is unreasonable. That is, regarding the previous refutations, at first an objection was raised based on the external schools by tentatively granting real entities; later, an objection was raised based on the real entities mutually accepted by the Hīnayāna and others. Question: If that is so, how does the World-Honoured One know phenomena of universal characteristics—such as suffering, impermanence, and so forth? He would be unable to condition the two truths, the three truths, and so on. Answer: As in the sixth fascicle of the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra, there are three extensive explanations. As in the Sarvāstivāda, the five aggregates are particular characteristics, while principles such as suffering and impermanence are universal characteristics. In Buddhist logic (hetuvidyā) there are many layers, all of which are extensively described elsewhere; they cannot be cited at length here, and students should know them.
