The Commentary states: The following explains the third line. Because the first six consciousnesses together discern coarse objects, differing from the seventh and eighth, they are combined under a single name. Question: These first six consciousnesses also take subtle objects as their objects, as in the six consciousnesses of a Buddha and so forth; why are they termed only coarse? Answer: First, because of the majority; second, because they are easy to know; third, because they are commonly recognizable by all sentient beings; fourth, because both Buddhists and non-Buddhists accept their existence; fifth, because they are established by consensus in both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna; sixth, because of the sense of non-commonality; seventh, because the seventh and eighth consciousnesses do not discern coarsely, and these latter two consciousnesses also extend to the *Vimalakīrti-sūtra*, not being that which is perfumed, and furthermore because they mutually illumine each other. The above is as explained in the *Cheng weishi lun shuyao*.
