Clarifying causal transformation refers precisely to seeds changing and producing fruits; fruits extend to seeds as well as active functioning, because seeds of their own category also produce one another. *Yogācārabhūmi*, fascicle five, on the seven meanings of seeds, states: "It serves as a cause for other natures, and also serves as a cause for its own nature in a subsequent moment, but not in the very same moment." Adducing the cause as that which perfumes intends to reveal that all active phenomena such as the seven consciousnesses are also called causes and are also called transforming agents; therefore, both vāsanās each adduce that which perfumes, because all causal condition-substances that establish the substance and produce fruits are called causal transformation; thus the meaning of change applies to both active functioning and seeds. Causal transformation of seeds exists solely in the eighth; causal transformation of active functioning extends to the remaining seven consciousnesses. It does not mention the seeds of self-view perfuming, because apart from these two they have no separate substance, and they are separately distinguished out of nominal [seeds], unable to induce separately the arising of subsequent fruits.
