述曰：後總料簡。前因能變等流習氣，習氣者種子也，必有其果，未知生何？如何生果？能起何果？即有三義，今顯所生通於八識，能為因緣生八識也。體，謂體性；相，謂相狀。自證、見、相俱名為識。

The Commentary states: Next is a general discrimination. Regarding the earlier [mention of] the seeds of equal outflow as causal transformation—seeds are latencies, and they necessarily have their fruits. But one does not yet know: what do they produce? How do they produce fruits? What fruits are they able to give rise to? There are three meanings. Now it is shown that what is produced extends across all eight consciousnesses, and that they can serve as primary condition to produce the eight consciousnesses. "Substance" refers to substantial nature; "marks" refers to appearance. The self-corroborating division, the seeing division, and the image division are all called "consciousness."
