述曰：自下解果相，即頌言異熟也，於中有四：一、顯異熟義；二、簡他宗；三、即頌名；四、釋妨難。此即初也。謂此識是能引諸界、諸趣、諸生，總善、惡業之異熟果，說名異熟。此意說是總業之果，明是總報故名異熟，簡別報果。別報果者，但名異熟生，不名異熟故。

The Commentary states: Below this explains the result-characteristic, which is 'vipāka' as spoken in the verse; within this there are four parts: first, revealing the meaning of vipāka; second, eliminating other schools; third, identifying it with the name in the verse; fourth, resolving objections. This is the first. It means that this consciousness is the vipāka result of the general wholesome and unwholesome karma that can lead to the various realms, destinies, and births, and is therefore named vipāka. This means that it is the result of general karma, clarifying that because it is the general retribution it is called vipāka, to distinguish it from the results of particular retribution. As for the results of particular retribution, they are only called 'vipāka-born' (vipākaja) and are not called vipāka.
