述曰：此出體也。言本識者，顯種所在，簡經部師色、心等持種。「親生自果」，簡異熟因，望所生果非種子故，要望自品能親生故。「功能差別」，簡現行七轉識等，望所生種雖是因緣，亦親生果，是現法故，非名功能，故以功能顯種子相。

The Commentary states: This points out the essential nature. Stating 'in the fundamental consciousness' indicates where seeds reside, excluding the holding of seeds by form, mind, and so forth in the system of the Sautrāntika masters. 'Directly generating their own fruits' excludes the cause of retribution (vipāka-hetu), because with respect to the fruit produced, it is not a seed, for it must be capable of directly generating with respect to its own category. 'Functional distinctions' excludes active phenomena such as the seven transforming consciousnesses; although with respect to the seeds produced they are cause-and-condition (hetu-pratyaya) and also directly generate fruits, because they are active phenomena, they are not named 'functions'; therefore, the mark of seeds is revealed by means of 'function.'
