The Commentary states: By such reasoning, atoms in the combined state are also not the sphere of the five consciousnesses. The syllogism is: Your atoms when uncombined should be objects of the five consciousnesses (thesis); because their entity is identical to the combined atoms (reason); like the combined atoms (example). Also, by reverse parallel: The combined aspect is not an object of the five consciousnesses (thesis); because its entity is identical to the atoms when uncombined (reason); like the atoms when uncombined (example). There are two meanings in this treatise passage, which may be known by reflection and inference. If they defend by saying: When uncombined there is also a combined aspect, but because it is subtle and concealed, the aspect is difficult to discern; one should again refute them: The atoms when uncombined should produce the cognition of combination, because their entity is identical to the combined atoms, like when combined; conversely challenging the combined to be like the uncombined, the inference is also the same. 'Definitely not the sphere of the five consciousnesses' summarizes and concludes it.
