The Commentary states: Below is the second part, refuting the establishment of new perfuming alone, which has five points: first, directly challenging their fundamental thesis; second, taking the occasion to broadly refute the Vibhajyavādins; third, stating the correct doctrine; fourth, resolving contradictions; fifth, general conclusion. Below is the first. 'Conditioned untainted' refers to the path of seeing and so forth. Lacking originally existent seeds, they would lack a cause and condition, and hence should not be able to arise. The syllogistic formulation is: Your first untainted [mind] should not be able to arise; because it lacks cause and condition; like a hare's horn. If they defend their view by saying: 'The supreme worldly dharma (laukikāgradharma) serves as its cause and condition, because among tainted dharmas this is superior'—this meaning is incorrect.
