The Commentary states: This explains the cognitive aspect. It is because the self-substance aspect of consciousness takes discernment as its cognitive aspect. 'Cognitive aspect' (ākāra) is the seeing aspect (darśanabhāga); by analogy, its entity is also thus. 'Aspect' (ākāra) means the entity, namely the mark of the object; operating upon the mark of the object is called the 'cognitive aspect'. Alternatively, 'aspect' means the form or appearance; operating upon the appearance of the object is called the 'cognitive aspect'. The former explanation extends to non-conceptual wisdom; the latter excludes it. Alternatively, it is the apparent form of understanding that operates upon an object; this explanation also excludes non-conceptual wisdom, because it is markless. However, the original meaning is solely operating upon marks, not the meaning of an understanding operation.
