The Commentary states: The nimitta is solely the prameya, the darśana is the pramāṇa, and the svasaṃvitti is the pramāṇaphala. The meaning of this verse is: now these three kinds are of one substance, which is a single consciousness; because they are not separate from consciousness, it says "only"; because their functions are distinct, it speaks of "three." What is the meaning of "result" (phala)? It means the completion of the cause. Since the darśanabhāga cognizing the nimitta is the pramāṇa, if the pramāṇa had no result, what benefit would there be in measuring the object? It is like a person measuring an object, giving rise to an understanding of the measure. In the Hīnayāna, the pramāṇaphala is precisely the darśanabhāga, the ākāra is the pramāṇa, and the external object is the prameya, which is slightly different from this. However, there are six masters, as well as accounts before and after Dignāga, regarding the difference in substance and nature between pramāṇa and pramāṇaphala, as explained in the Yinming chao. Although the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra speaks of three parts, it cites no verse as proof, having only prose.
