述曰：此舉喻答。此答經部，彼末計許滅定有心，故以例答，如滅定中不離身識，行亦難知，應信第八識恒體有。此答上座及末經部有細意識，於此可然。薩婆多等定中無識，如隔日瘧，答薩婆多，彼不許滅定有識，故以理答之。

The Commentary states: This adduces an analogy to reply. This replies to the Sautrāntikas, whose later branch allows that the cessation attainment has mind; hence it replies by analogy: just as in the attainment of cessation the consciousness that does not depart from the body also has an ākāra difficult to know, one should believe that the entity of the eighth consciousness always exists. This replies to the Sthaviras and the later Sautrāntikas, who maintain a subtle mental consciousness; here this is acceptable. For the Sarvāstivādins and others, there is no consciousness in this attainment, like an alternate-day ague; in replying to the Sarvāstivādins, since they do not allow that the cessation attainment has consciousness, it replies to them by reasoning.
