The Commentary states: That is, in the state where attention and so forth have not yet arisen, the seed of attention conceptually alerts the seed of the mind that should arise, saying, 'You may arise and incline toward the object'; it does not alert the seeds of all minds, because those that have not met conditions will not necessarily arise. Attention alerting the mind has two functional powers: first, causing the mind that has not arisen to arise properly; second, causing the mind, once arisen, to incline toward the object. Hence it says, 'alerting the seed of the mind that should arise and directing it toward the object.' The Nyāyānusāra masters say that the function of attention arises in the future; here, in terms of the seed, the semantic force is the same. It is named attention (manaskāra) because it activates (kāra) the mind (manas); the seed of attention can alert the seed of the mind. This explanation follows the text. Or, actual manifest attention is simultaneous with consciousness, and conceptually it is said to alert the seed of the mind that should arise, causing it to arise and incline toward the object; in principle there is also no contradiction. Alerting only after it has arisen makes the principle of alerting difficult to see, so the treatise does not accept it. Question: Attention alerts the mind, and it is said to be able to alert in the seed state; contact and so forth produce mental factors, but cannot produce them in the manifest state. In the face of this difficulty, one should exert effort: in the seed state, there is not yet the meaning of the three factors not coming together, nor is there the union of mind and mental factors, which is unlike contacting an object; therefore, contact is only said to have function when manifest. Question: If the seed of the mind can produce the manifest only when alerted by attention, then since mental factors have nothing to alert them, should their seeds not produce the manifest? Answer: Because of the alerting by attention, mental factors are then able to arise; the principle is equal with the mind, so how could this be an objection? Question: If so, it should be stated:
