The Commentary states: Here, 'establishing' is an alternative term for taking an image: that is, [determining that] 'this is green, not non-green,' etc., making such delimitations and taking the universal characteristic is called establishing. Because of taking this image, one then gives rise to conventional designations like 'this is green,' etc.; since the types of natures are numerous, they are called 'various'. When various treatises call conventional designations 'perception', they speak from the cause; when they call perception 'conventional designation', they speak from the effect—just as worldly people say, 'What is your thought (saṃjñā)? What is the name (nāma)?' This activity applies only to perception concomitant with the mental consciousness (manovijñāna); perception concomitant with the other consciousnesses does not give rise to names. Even if it is said that it gives rise to names indirectly without fault, how could perception in the eighth consciousness give rise to names? From this, one knows that this activity is not omnipresent.
