述曰：其因亦爾，觀此現法有酬前之相，即熟變相等。觀此所從生處，而心變為過去，實非過去而是現在，假說所變為現法因。對此假曾有過去因，而說現在為果。

The Commentary states: The cause is also like this. Observing that this present dharma has the mark of repaying what came before—namely marks of maturation, transformation, and so on—and observing where it arose from, the mind transforms into the past. In reality it is not the past, but the present; one conventionally speaks of what is transformed as the cause of the present dharma. In contrast to this conventionally designated past cause that once existed, one speaks of the present as an effect.
