3.654

The Commentary states: Below, it sets forth the entity of the dharma in three parts: first, a direct explanation. The Sthaviras and others say: Form dharmas are sluggish and have the functions of three marks, enduring through one temporal period—namely arising, abiding, and ceasing, with no separate time. Mental dharmas are rapid and have only two temporal positions, namely arising and ceasing. These two marks are analyzed on the basis of the dharma itself; apart from the dharma there are no separate entities, yet both are present, as they maintain no past or future. Here, taking citta and caitasika dharmas as an example for discussion, it therefore says: "even the most rapid definitely have two temporal positions."
