The Commentary states: The word "arhat" means "worthy", which comprises the three meanings of slaying the thieves, worthy of offerings, and non-arising. Why does it not mention being free from the cognitive obstruction? The substance of the cognitive obstruction does not obstruct liberation, having no function to generate karma or moisten rebirth. Why does it not mention being free from the death of transformation? The non-learners of the two vehicles have transformational birth, which is not brought about or generated by afflictions. Because they are already free from bonds and have attained liberation, they have no death in segments. Learners are also superior fields of merit; as when emerging from the path of seeing, making offerings to them brings present merit. Why do they not obtain the name "worthy of offerings"? Because they are not capable of receiving offerings at all times, and relative to the non-learners of their own vehicle, they are not complete.
