The Commentary states: The fifth [section] explains it. When that [passage] speaks of four kinds of persons, three of them are based on definite determination; as for the bodhisattva, having turned the mind [toward the Great Vehicle], they definitely do not fall back into generating the defilements, and from the initial generation of the mind for twenty thousand kalpas up to attaining Buddhahood, they are throughout called non-retrogressing. Furthermore, in progressing toward Bodhi they take the name of bodhisattva; it is not the directly proceeding [bodhisattva] who is the fourth kind of person, because their seeds of defilement have not yet been perpetually destroyed. If [it were held that] because one portion of active manifestations is absent, it is therefore called abandonment, then because one portion of discrimination is absent, it should also be called abandonment; moreover, from the path of seeing onward, whenever the seventh [consciousness] does not generate the grasping [of the storehouse as self], it should also be called abandonment—yet [in fact] it has not been abandoned at all. If it were not so, the directly proceeding [bodhisattva] from the eighth stage onward would be excluded from being non-retrogressing, because they would not be able to abandon the ālaya[vijñāna]. If so, the bodhisattvas who have entered the stages should also be called retrogressing, because they have not abandoned the ālayavijñāna at all. Question: If that is so, why does this text not speak of non-retrogressing bodhisattvas?
