述曰：梵云阿陀那，此云執持，執持諸種、有色根故，此通凡、聖。《攝論》第一云：為取所依，唯在凡夫一染義說，非通諸聖。《雜集論》等第七十三、《解深密》同此，亦能持根依。然據勝說，約根為論，至下自知。

The Commentary states: In Sanskrit it is called ādāna, which here translates as 'appropriation' or 'holding' (ādāna), because it appropriates and maintains the seeds and the material sense faculties; this applies to both ordinary worldlings and noble ones. The first fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: Being the basis of grasping, it is spoken of only with reference to ordinary beings under the single meaning of defilement, not common to all noble ones. The Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā and the seventy-third fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, as well as the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra, agree with this, stating that it also sustains the support of the faculties. However, taking it according to the preeminent sense, it is discussed in reference to the faculties, as will be known below.
