The Commentary states: A ruler among men transformed the land and governed the people, then renounced his throne and went forth; because he became the leader of the school, it was named the Mahīśāsaka school. It is meant that in the formless realm form is absent; in the heaven of non-conception and so on mind is absent; citta-viprayukta-saṃskāras have no real essence; and the rest cannot be called the aggregate that exhausts saṃsāra. The eighth consciousness can be so regarded, because it exists in all states. Asvabhāva's commentary says: That school has three aggregates: 1. the single-moment aggregate, namely dharmas that arise and cease from moment to moment; 2. the single-lifespan aggregate, namely dharmas that constantly persist up to death, such as the faculties; 3. the aggregate that exhausts saṃsāra, namely dharmas that constantly persist up to the vajropamasamādhi. Three names are established for these three classes of aggregates; the remaining form, mind, and so forth, as explained previously, have interruptions and do not exhaust saṃsāra; therefore only the eighth consciousness is the third aggregate. Vasubandhu does not have this explanation.
