The Commentary states: Some say that the five desires are this; they too are not true. That is, whether ordinary persons or noble ones, having become detached from the desire realm, they still cherish a self; just as on hearing the sound of thunder, fear arises. This is not universally accepted, for they maintain that one who is detached from desire has no self. This presses them by principle, as with being frightened on hearing a sound and so forth. That *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* speaks on the basis of what is commonly accepted as having a self, and therefore does not say that one detached from desire has a self.
