The Commentary states: [Some hold that] pleasurable feeling is the self, and that it is not painful or neutral feeling, because [the latter two] do not accord with oneself and do not increase delight. [However,] that is not the true object of attachment, because those who are free from the defilement of the third dhyāna intensely despise pleasurable feeling, yet both ordinary people and noble ones [there] still have [clinging to] a self. Vasubandhu does not explain [this]; Asvabhāva says: 'Pleasurable feeling conjoined with greed'—[meaning that] both pleasure and greed are together the object of attachment, because pleasure enhances greed; this is grasping them collectively. Alternatively, they may be grasped separately as this object of attachment, because they are grasped by distinct mental states. In this [latter view], where there is only pleasurable feeling without greed, there are those who grasp [it] separately; however, there is none who grasps greed alone.
