The Commentary states: This is the first [part]. Next, explaining each individually in accordance with sūtras and supported by reason, there are ten proofs in total. A summary verse states: 'Holding seeds, the vipāka mind, realms and destinies, having appropriation, consciousness. / Samsara, conditions, dependence on nutriment. The samāpatti of cessation, and mental defilement and purity.' / Each proof has three parts: first, citing a sūtra where, without this consciousness, the meaning of the sūtra cannot be established, as below in this first proof beginning with 'For a sūtra says'; second, specifically examining the meaning to demonstrate that it fails due to conflict with reason, as below in 'Namely, when the evolving consciousnesses are in the samāpatti of cessation and so forth'; third, concluding by returning to the fundamental consciousness to show the failure of the other's meaning, as at the end of this proof where 'the subsequent mind' is precisely this eighth consciousness. Most of the proofs below have these three parts one by one, which should be understood following the text; however, among the eight proofs [of the Yogācārabhūmi], this has only five, which can be fully compared and clarified. Those not explaining the other three will naturally be understood below.
