The Commentary states: If manifest activity arises without seeds, it would be identical to the spontaneous generation [held by] non-Buddhists, taking only nature (svabhāva) as the cause and having no other cause; below, in the refutation in the tenth [fascicle], it is also said: because there is nothing to be perfumed. If they lack their own seeds, then in passing back and forth between realms and grounds, there would be the fault that all defiled dharmas arise without a cause. But that Sautrāntika school holds that form receives perfuming and holds seeds, as related at the end of [fascicle] fifty-one [of the Yogācārabhūmi]. Or, although unassociated [formations] are held by them to be conceptual dharmas devoid of real substance, the Mahāsāṃghikas have unassociated [formations] but lack perfuming. Now both are refuted, because there are also such tenets.
