4.289

述曰:身器離心,理非有故,不可為有情依,此總對諸部。又無色界應無有情,以無色故如前已說故。若爾命根、同分足為有情依,遍而無斷可為真異熟,何須此識?

The Commentary states: Because the body and receptacle apart from mind cannot reasonably exist, they cannot serve as the support of a sentient being; this addresses all schools in general. Furthermore, there would be no sentient beings in the formless realm, because there is no form [there], as has already been stated before. [Objection:] If so, the life-faculty (jīvitendriya) and generic similarity (nikāya-sabhāga) are sufficient to serve as the support of a sentient being; being pervasive and uninterrupted, they could be the true ripening—why is this consciousness needed?
