The Commentary states: Below explains the appropriating mind, demonstrating that it is only the eighth. In this there are two parts: first, revealing that the eighth has it while the seven lack it; second, clarifying ambiguities in expression. This is the first passage. Which mind is capable of appropriation? Only the mind of retribution, namely the eighth consciousness. Drawn by past karma, its essence arises spontaneously, not arising from present conditions. Even if the seventh consciousness were also drawn by present conditions, it could not appropriate. This is the first reason among the five reasons for appropriation in the eight proofs; below [the treatise] will formulate formal inferences (prayogamāna) itself, so there is no need to laboriously describe them here. "Not wholesome or defiled, etc."—"etc." includes indeterminate [minds] such as deportment; that is the second reason. It means that because wholesomeness and unwholesomeness can be found in the six consciousnesses, they cannot appropriate. "Of one continuous nature" means that the eighth consciousness is subsumed under one continuous nature of retribution-indeterminate; this is the third reason. It means that because being subsumed under one continuous nature of retribution-indeterminate cannot be found in the six consciousnesses, they cannot appropriate. "Capable of all-pervading appropriation" means that only the root consciousness can pervade and appropriate the five faculties and other phenomena; this is the fourth reason. It means that because the six consciousnesses have distinct bases, they cannot pervade and appropriate. Here, the proof regarding the Buddha's material faculties will be explained below. "Continuous appropriation" means that the eighth consciousness appropriates at all times, not having appropriation at some times and non-appropriation at others. For when it does not appropriate, [the body] decays; this is the fifth reason. It means that the bases of the six consciousnesses would incur the fault of repeated appropriation. Only the eighth consciousness is endowed with these five characteristics. The seven transforming consciousnesses such as the eye [consciousness] are none of them drawn by karma, and because they lack the five characteristics, they are not capable of appropriating.
