The Commentary states: This is [the point that] it is not the evolving consciousnesses. The six evolving consciousnesses have interruption during the five states and have changing among the three natures. Due to this principle, they lack a perpetual sustaining function, just like sound, wind, and so forth. In this, there are three syllogisms, because there are three reasons: first, having interruption; second, having changing; third, lacking a perpetual function. They cannot be established as the consciousness that sustains life and warmth; this universally refutes the various schools. Alternatively, if they were to say that the evolving consciousnesses have a sustaining function but do not sustain perpetually, then this single [point] serves as an established reason. If they were to say that there is a subtle sixth mental consciousness that has a perpetual sustaining function, now it is made the probandum: it lacks a perpetual sustaining function; because it has interruption and changing; like sound, wind, and so forth. This also can serve as a syllogism.
