The Commentary states: The second subdivision establishes the syllogism that the six [consciousnesses] are incorrect. In these two states there are definitely no evolving consciousnesses; because their activities and cognitive objects are unknowable; like the mindless state. This directly refutes the Sarvāstivādin, citing the three mindless states as examples. If it concurrently refutes the Sautrāntikas and others, then it refers to the former two distracted states, together with the two absorptions and non-conception, making five states. However, those two schools assert that the five consciousnesses do not exist while holding that the mental consciousness exists; but now, herein, it directly refutes their mental consciousness, and hypothetically negates the five, speaking generally of the six consciousnesses. It does not directly negate the conceptualization [of an eighth], but rather challenges [the view that there is] total non-existence.
