The Commentary states: The second [part] shows that the eighth [consciousness] is [the one]. Because it is extremely subtle, its active mode and cognitive object are both uncognizable, which excludes the sixth mental consciousness, whose essence is neither subtle nor true fruition. Because it is the fruit of leading karma, subsumed under general fruition; because it is continuous throughout a single lifetime without interruption; because it is eternally unchanging, its nature being determined; because it is in a distracted mental state, not in a meditative concentration state; because it is a time when mind is present, not identical to the five states where mind is absent; calling it the mind at birth and death does not contradict correct reason. This consciousness of ours now, since it is not a transforming consciousness, is extremely subtle in substance. Although it exists at birth and death, its active mode and cognitive object are both uncognizable, unlike coarse consciousnesses that can be known; hence [positing] the six transforming consciousnesses contradicts correct reason. Here, the reason why stupor/obscuration is taken as the cause to explain the non-existence of transforming consciousnesses at the time of birth and death is accepted in common by all worthy ones and taught unanimously by the teachings. Next, countless treatise masters such as Master Nanda, the Treasury of True Dharma, and Master Jayasena took it as their basis, constantly expounding it; exceptionally enhancing wisdom and deliberation, their fame illuminated India, their renown is praised at present, and the unintelligent multitudes follow their pointers in unison. Only our great master [Xuanzang] slightly refuted it upon arrival in India, and when uncovering this, further amended their previous errors, directly presenting the correct doctrine as detailed later in the treatise and in his *Refutation of Evil Views*. Now that all commentaries are complete and superior meanings gather like clouds, the worthy masters have set them forth, fully hitting the mark.
