The Commentary states: When the sixth mental consciousness constantly arises, it conditions whatever object it encounters and stops depending on whatever support it relies upon; it is unlike the root consciousness, which abides long in a single support and determinately conditions this object. Cold touch should not gradually arise due to the six. Because of such texts, among the seven consciousnesses below, there is one view positing that the eighth consciousness takes the five sense faculties as its basis; as it says here, because the five consciousnesses have distinct bases they cannot appropriate, whereas that with a common basis can appropriate. If one could appropriate without relying on the faculties, the sixth should do so; if not relying means unable to appropriate, then taking the eighth would be indeterminate, hence the eighth relies on the five faculties. And as it says here 'because it does not abide in the body', the eighth consciousness also abides in the body.
