The Commentary states: The fourth part establishes the formal inference. Even if one concedes that in the prolonged subsequent stages and the initial stage there are the five consciousnesses, the evolving consciousnesses have interruption and change; their nature is unsolid, and they lack the power to uphold name and form at all times. How then can they be said to serve constantly as conditions? Because their essence is not constant. The inference is: The evolving consciousnesses cannot constantly uphold name and form; because they are subject to interruption and change; like sound, wind, and so forth. In the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, [the citations concerning] 'turning back at consciousness,' and 'if consciousness does not perish, name and form grow and increase,' are all subsumed herein, for logically it is subsumed under the consciousness that is mutually conditioning.
