The Commentary states: Below it correctly concludes. "If one does not accept that there is one whose entity is subtle" reverses the previous "coarse." Below it reverses the previous "unstable": permanent, indeterminate, of uniform nature, unchanging. Furthermore, it is constant and uninterrupted, its entity pervades the three realms without being absent anywhere, and it holds lifespan and so on—"and so on" includes the faculties, etc. In the absence of this consciousness, on the basis of what consciousness could it be said that it does not depart from the body? Lifespan is the life-faculty; that which can hold lifespan holds the seed of consciousness; that lifespan is not extinguished means life is not absent. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "It is not generated in order to counteract this attainment of cessation; it is generated solely to counteract the evolving consciousnesses." This sets forth the correct doctrine to refute the various schools together. The Sarvāstivādins previously came up with a defense.
