The Commentary states: Next, in the second section, there are two masters within the Sautrāntika who offer defenses: first, that there is no separate contact, as the coming together of the three is itself contact; second, that there is a separate mental factor of contact, existing distinctly outside the coming together of the three. Even today the Sautrāntika has these two masters. In both of their views, at other times the coming together of the three has efficacy: because there is no separate contact, it can constitute contact; or because there is a separate contact, it can generate contact. Because of constituting or generating contact, feeling and so forth can arise simultaneously; this occurs together with the mind and so forth prior to the attainment. Because one felt revulsion toward the mental factors prior to this attainment, and these factors have been reviled, the three things lack efficacy in the state of the attainment; according to either of the two theories, contact is neither constituted nor generated. Since that is so, in this state there are also no feeling and so forth; one cannot use other states that are not reviled to draw a parallel to this [attainment].
