The Commentary states: Above, the verse text was explained; below, it is analyzed through questions and answers. There are two parts to this, which are clear and intelligible from the text. The question says: Just as when speaking of eight consciousnesses, this too is called a consciousness (*vijñāna*), and *manas* is called "mind" (*yi*), if one combines the generic and specific names, it would be called "mind-consciousness" (*manovijñāna*). Furthermore, fascicle 63 says: Consciousnesses are of two kinds: first, the *ālayavijñāna*; second, the evolving consciousnesses (*pravṛttivijñāna*). These are further divided into seven kinds: namely, the eye consciousness, up to the mental consciousness (*manovijñāna*). That is to say, the seventh is called "mental consciousness" (*manovijñāna*). How is this name distinguished from the sixth mental consciousness (*manovijñāna*)? The first [part of the objection] is a logical challenge based on compounding generic and specific terms; the second is an analogical challenge based on the text of the treatise.
