述曰：唯立意名為簡心、識。雖皆可說名心、意、識，據增勝義但七名意。積集心義、了別識義劣餘識故，簡後心、前識。但立意名，恒審思故。

The Commentary states: Establishing only the name *manas* is done to differentiate it from *citta* and *vijñāna*. Although all of them can be said to be called *citta*, *manas*, and *vijñāna*, according to their predominant meaning only the seventh is called *manas*. Because the meaning of *citta* as accumulating and the meaning of *vijñāna* as discerning are inferior to those of the other consciousnesses, it is differentiated from the latter, *citta*, and the former, *vijñāna*. It is established solely with the name *manas* because of its continuous, deliberative thinking.
