The Commentary states: It is to show that this seventh consciousness serves as the proximate basis for that sixth, the mental consciousness, and therefore it is only called *manas*. "Proximate basis" means: because they accord with one another; because both engage in discrimination; and because when the sixth cognizes an object, the seventh provides it with power. For this reason, when the seventh is undefiled, the sixth is undefiled, and when the seventh is defiled, the sixth is not undefiled. It is not that when the seventh cognizes an object the sixth consciousness gives it power; therefore the sixth has the word "consciousness," while the seventh is only called *manas*. To differentiate it from the eighth, which also provides power to the sixth, it is further said to be "proximate," because the eighth may serve as a remote basis. Fascicle 51 states: Due to the existence of the eighth, there is *manas*; with *manas* as its basis, the mental consciousness is able to arise; therefore that eighth is the remote basis, and this one is the proximate basis. There is also another explanation: Because of continuous deliberative thinking, this is only called *manas*; because the sixth alters and is interrupted when cognizing objects, the name "consciousness" is added. Furthermore, it is to show that this serves as the uncommon basis (*asādhāraṇāśraya*) among the six consciousnesses, and therefore it is only called *manas*, since the immediately preceding condition (*samanantara-pratyaya*) is a common basis. Moreover, because the six kinds [of consciousness] arise dependent upon the seventh kind, it is called a proximate basis, like the eye consciousness and the others. This completes the first part: presenting the substance of this transformation of consciousness and explaining the meaning of its name.
